Bombing again in south, Zelensky fires commander | NOW

NU.nl regularly gives you an overview of the situation in Ukraine. With this time: New heavy weapons from Germany arrived in Ukraine on Tuesday and the south of Ukraine is according to regional authorities met by “mass” Russian bombing.

It would be the coastal town of Zatoka, south of Odesa. The port city of Mykolaiv is also said to have been hit.

Rockets would have hit the infrastructure in the port city, among other things. Mykolaiv is close to the front line in southern Ukraine. As a result, the city is often hit by Russian shelling.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky earlier in the day shared a video of destroyed buildings in Zatoka, a popular seaside resort on the Black Sea. He added that Zakota is an ordinary village, where no troops are stationed. “The Russians just wanted to shoot.”

Russia says it owns largest Ukrainian coal-fired power station

Russian troops say they have taken control of Ukraine’s largest coal-fired power station near Svitlodarsk in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk.

The pro-Russian separatists in Donetsk have distributed photos of Russian mercenaries from the so-called Wagner group in front of the coal-fired power station office. According to other reports, the fighting around the power plant, which has been going on since the end of May, continues unabated.

Heavy weapons arrived from Germany

Ukraine has received new heavy weapons from Germany to be better equipped to fight the Russian army.

According to German defense minister Christine Lambrecht, these include three Mars II missile launch systems, similar to the American HIMARS missile systems. With these precision weapons, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry says it has successfully eliminated several Russian military targets in recent weeks.

Lambrecht says that three armored howitzers have also been delivered to the Ukrainian army. These are part of a joint project with the Netherlands, which also supplies armored howitzers.

Zelensky replaces commander in eastern Ukraine

President Zelensky has replaced a commander in eastern Ukraine. Since August 2020, Hryhori Halahan has commanded specially trained military units fighting pro-Russian separatists and the Russian army in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

A reason has not been disclosed. The Kyiv Independent reports that the special forces are conducting reconnaissance missions and covert operations behind enemy lines.

In eastern Ukraine (the Donets Basin), Ukrainian troops have suffered heavy casualties. The regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, where fighting has been going on since 2014, are now largely in the hands of the Russians.
