Bombay Bicycle Club: A Homebody Band Navigating Genres and Impressing with New Album Collaborations

Bombay Bicycle Club has always been a homebody. The company entered the scene with a row of guitars, but has since navigated between genres often enough without this tried and tested instrument around their shoulders. From folk to electro to world music, the band can show it all in the Alpha, a stage that Bombay Bicycle Club is not impressed with. There is a good-humoured company on the shelves.

The corners of the oeuvre interlock well. The Mumbai-written ‘Feel’ (with Bollywood sample) fits neatly next to the angular ‘Evening/Morning’ of debut I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose. This song is also played with a friendly appearance. The band has never been the hippest. Meanwhile there are already three bald heads in the band, that’s one more than Right Said Fred. Frontman Jack Steadman (aka Mr Jukes) is eloquent and full of laughter. The audience also quickly realizes that a very cool performance is taking place here. With a slightly different turn each time.

Because who could have seen it coming: Selena Gomez cover ‘Lose You To Love Me’, according to Steadman a ‘masterpiece’ and an ‘inspiration’. The background singer takes her moment by walking onto the catwalk with her pregnant belly and owning a singing part. The band from North London’s Crouch End make it look effortless this afternoon, playing all those original guitar riffs. In their weirdness they are also quite danceable. Bombay Bicycle Club is simply in shape.

THE MOMENT:

The sixth album will be released later this year, featuring Damon Albarn, Nilüfer Yanya and Holly Homberstone, among others. The collaboration with Homberstone is played, but the highlight is that first single: ‘My Big Day’. Fiercely played in the head of the set. Good to know that Bombay Bicycle Club is still worth checking out.
