“Bomb Cyclone” warning: “Historical storm” hits US East Coast

A strong winter storm hits Boston and New York and several other states. One death has already been reported. Thousands of flights are canceled and warnings are given of power outages and falling iguanas in Florida.

One of the worst winter storms in years has hit the east coast of the United States. Thousands of flights were canceled and severe weather warnings were issued for around 70 million people. A state of emergency was declared in the states of New York and New Jersey, and a snow emergency applied in Boston. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu spoke of a “historic storm”. A first death was reported in northern New York.

According to the FlightAware website, around 5,000 flights were canceled on Friday and Saturday, and more than 880 were already reported for Sunday. The cities of Boston and New York and their surroundings were hit the hardest.

In some parts of New York field around 30 inches of snow. Thousands of homeless people are looking for shelter in the underground network of the metropolis of nine million. Mayor Eric Adams called on all New Yorkers to stay at home if possible. The warning didn’t stop Times Square’s famous “naked cowboy,” Robert Burck, from his usual street gig in his shorts, hat and boots.

A woman was found dead in her car on Long Island in upstate New York. She probably froze to death, Nassau County Mayor Bruce Blakeman said on the famous radio.

The weather service warned of gusts of wind at speeds of 80 to 120 kilometers per hour and spoke of “almost impossible travel conditions” in the north-east of the USA. He predicted more than a meter of fresh snow for the Boston region alone. In parts of Massachusetts, almost 117,000 households were already without power.

Iguana warning

Frost warnings have even been issued for the south. In Florida, people have been asked to beware of iguanas that could fall from trees, paralyzed by the cold. The animals can weigh up to nine kilograms.

According to the weather service, the snow and ice storm is likely to continue to improve rapidly, a phenomenon sometimes referred to as a “bomb cyclone” (bomb cyclone). New York State Gov. Kathy Hochul advised citizens to stay home over the weekend. Just two weeks ago, a heavy snowstorm caused massive power and flight failures in the eastern United States.
