The ailing aircraft manufacturer Boeing is serious about its large job cuts in the corona virus crisis. Around 6,770 employees in the USA receive their dismissal letters this week, as the Airbus rival announced today. The layoffs come in addition to the approximately 5,520 employees who have accepted severance offers and will leave the company in the next few weeks.
There will be thousands more departures in the coming months, Boeing chief Dave Calhoun said in a memo to the employees.
The wave of layoffs comes as no surprise: Boeing had already announced at the end of April that it would cut its workforce by around ten percent from around 160,000. This plan has now only been substantiated. The company has long been deeply in crisis because of its 737 Max aircraft, which has been banned from take-off worldwide for more than a year after two devastating crashes. The corona virus pandemic, which has almost brought air traffic to a standstill, has put the company under even greater pressure.
