BMW’s Hydrogen-Powered iX5 Model: Successfully Tested in Hot Weather and Harsh Conditions

German automaker BMW is one of those continuing to work on the development of hydrogen fuel cells, with the manufacturer testing its technology in the iX5 model. It’s essentially the same as the X5, but powered by hydrogen. BMW says the car has been tested in hot weather in the United Arab Emirates, calling this part of the test program the most difficult to date.

BMW ran endurance tests to make sure the systems worked in hot weather and the engineers were happy with what they saw. Engineers also wanted to test the system’s resistance to other variables, namely the sand and dust typical of a desert region.

The Bavarians are continuing the pilot project, testing various hydrogen solutions for everyday transport needs, so that the information obtained can be applied and better solutions can be prepared. As you know, BMW’s new Neue Klasse platform is not only designed for electric cars, but it can also be equipped with a hydrogen fuel cell system.

BMW has already tested this model in winter conditions in Scandinavia and the manufacturer was very satisfied with what it saw. In contrast to electric cars, which reduce the distance traveled per charge in low temperatures, the hydrogen car had no such problems. Of course, the question of refueling infrastructure and other things, but BMW, like Toyota, chooses not to put all their cards on one technology, instead developing various technical solutions.
