BMW resumes production

The German carmaker BMW wants to gradually ramp up the Spartanburg car plant in the USA and the motorcycle plant in Berlin from 4 May after weeks of downtime. In Germany, car production should not start again until May 11 in Dingolfing, Lower Bavaria, as well as in Mexico, as the company announced on Friday.

“At the earliest on May 18”, the carmakers in the BMW parent plant in Munich, in Leipzig, Regensburg, in South Africa’s Rosslyn and in the mini-plant in Oxford should go back to work – “depending on market developments”.

In Munich, Dingolfing, Regensburg and Leipzig, almost 20,000 BMW employees are on short-time work. Several thousand employees had used the production stop to convert the factories. The BMW engine factories are scheduled to start again next Monday to supply the car factories.

Due to the closure of car dealerships in Europe and the USA and the collapse in demand, BMW had shut down its car plants in Europe, South Africa and Mexico in mid-March and in the US in late March. The belts at the largest BMW location in Shenyang, China, have been running again since mid-February. (apa / dpa)
