BMW handed over its millionth electrified car. He wants to beat the second million in two years

About 70 percent of the electric cars sold so far were hybrids, board member Pieter Nota said at a round table with journalists. BMW believes that hybrids will continue to play an important role, especially for customers without easy access to chargers, he added.

“The delivery of our millionth electrified vehicle is a milestone in our transformation, and we now have another one in mind. Our goal is to cross the two million mark in just two years, “said Nota.

According to him, continuing to modernize fossil fuel cars is another important step towards making the whole sector more sustainable. BMW has long invested in a wide range of technologies and, with a view to reducing emissions, does not focus only on electric cars. However, he opposes blanket bans on the purchase of cars with internal combustion engines.

The carmaker has set a goal to increase the proportion of electric cars sold by at least half by 2030. So it has a more conservative target than its competitors. BMW chief Oliver Zipse said in October that the company would have an offer of electric cars ready if a market banned internal combustion cars by then.

BMW has consistently emphasized that the main obstacle to the faster spread of electric cars to customers is the lack of charging infrastructure. Some analysts see the carmaker’s more conservative approach as a competitive advantage.

BMW sales in November were slightly below last year’s level, Nota said. The supply was limited by a lack of chips. However, according to him, the company remains convinced that it will record sales growth compared to last year.

In the future, the automated portfolio of the carmaker will increase the number of purely battery-powered electric cars at the expense of today’s still dominant hybrids. BMW is currently relying on battery-powered electric vehicles without a combustion engine hatchback Mini E, ageless i3, SUV iX3 and recently introduced newsi4 and the flagship SUX iX.

Over the next year, the BMW Group will expand this purely electric range by some version 7 series and X1. In 2023, Series 5 will be added to the electricity portfolio. A successor will follow Mini Countryman also available as an electric car and also an electric one Rolls-Royce Spectre.
