BMKG Reveals the Cause of Jakarta’s Air Quality in the Unhealthy Category

Jakarta

Air Quality in the Capital City has been named the third worst air quality in the world in recent days. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) revealed the cause of the quality air in Jakarta worsened.

Plt. BMKG Deputy for Climatology, Urip Haryoko, explained that the pollutant level in Jakarta has experienced a spike in the last few days. From BMKG data, pollutant levels are at the level of 148 g/m3.

The high number of pollutants makes the air quality in Jakarta included in the category of unhealthy air. Even these pollutants can be seen with the naked eye.

“The high concentration of PM2.5 compared to the previous days can also be seen when the air condition in Jakarta looks quite thick/dark,” said Urip as quoted from Between, Sunday (19/6/2022).

Urip said the air quality in Jakarta is influenced by various emission sources. The emission sources come from local sources, such as transportation and residential, or from regional sources from industrial areas.

Then, the emissions in a certain time accumulate and cause an increase in pollutants in Jakarta. In addition, wind movement makes pollutants shift from emission sources to other locations.

“The surface layer wind pattern shows the movement of air masses from the east and northeast towards Jakarta, and has an impact on the accumulation of PM2.5 concentrations in this area,” explained Urip

High humidity is also known to cause an increase in the adsorption process or change of state from gas to particles. This also causes the appearance of an inversion layer close to the surface.

“The impact of the presence of an inversion layer causes PM2.5 on the surface to be trapped, unable to move to other air layers, and results in the accumulation of its measured concentration in the instrument. monitoring,” Life light.

According to Urip, the poor air quality in Jakarta can have an impact on residents who have a history of respiratory and cardiovascular disorders. He appealed to the public to reduce outdoor activities.

“Therefore, the public is advised to reduce outdoor activities and use personal protection such as appropriate masks to reduce the level of exposure to air pollutants,” he concluded.
