Blur: The Ballad of Darren – A Melancholic Journey into the Souls of Mature Musicians

It is a bitter collection from which hints of a sense of loss, gloom and personal crisis emerge every now and then. Therefore, the songs contain a number of rhetorical questions. Why are we losing everything that was beautiful? Why are we no longer excited to build something big? Where are we walking? What is the source of hope? Thirty-five years after their formation, the quartet from London is asking all this, looking for an answer to all this.

But such questions are not good for Britpop or mainstream pop. And so the band stepped out of these waters elsewhere. If at the beginning of the nineties, in her most significant period, she scored points in the world charts with sweet pop, with the new album she stepped into the arms of indie rock. In it, he no longer plays so much on likability, no matter how purposefully he avoids it, but above all he communicates feelings and searches for answers.

Damon Albarn has already achieved many emotions in singing in his musical projects (Gorillaz, The Good, the Bad & the Queen or Rocket Juice & the Moon). On this album, he is mostly melancholic and casual, in the song Goodbye Albert he even talks almost casually, in Far Away Island he resorts to interpretive intimacy with a musical item that takes you somewhere in the seventies. In The Rabbi, a touch of country is noticeable again.

The coquetry with seventies glam rock in the song St. Charles Square or a reminder of one of David Bowie’s artistic expressions in Barbaric. At the same time, these two tracks (along with the slightly lighter The Narcissist) are among the most interesting on the collection. They have a visible inner life, which pushes out the hope that the concept of this record was not to create an atmosphere of gloom, but to interweave it with a strong experience during creation and interpretation.

Although at first The Ballad of Darren collection may seem like a disappointment, in the end it turns out to be an interesting and wise journey into the souls of mature musicians who find that the world no longer belongs to them.

Sufficiently open and mature listeners will soon succumb to their mood and opinion, because even for them this collection of songs is enriching.
