Blue fireball meteor explodes over the US; watch videos

An explosive meteor, classified as a “fireball”, was seen crossing the midwest skies of the United States, on Sunday morning (9). At least 11 cameras recorded the moment of the explosion, around 1:04 am (Brasília time).

Videos recorded by surveillance cameras, smart doorbells or doorkeepers – and even a car – show the trail super bright of the meteor, followed by a beautiful sequence of blue and greenish explosions that illuminate the surroundings.

The meteor is classified by scientists as a bolide: a “fireball”, which leaves an ionized trail, very luminous and long lasting, and in the end it explodes. It shines brighter than the planet Venus and even the full moon (the two brightest objects in our night sky).

The American Meteorological Society (AMS) received 51 reports, from four different states, about the meteor: Minnesota (the vast majority), North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. The night turned into day for a few seconds in these regions.

Although impressive, it is a harmless phenomenon. It is a space rock (meteoroid) of a few centimeters, which entered our atmosphere and probably was completely disintegrated by it.

If fragments have fallen to the ground – fragments named after meteorites – they are certainly too small to cause damage to people or buildings.
