Ratzeburg (aa / pm). As was the case a year ago, after the 2020 summer vacation, all pupils in the district were invited to participate in a children’s art competition either through schools or directly as individual children’s artists. The competition is supported by the Culture & Environment Forum and follows its annual motto. This year this is the “KulturLandschaft in the lens”.

The children’s artists were able to approach the topic of “Blossoming Landscapes” completely freely: What are “Blossoming Landscapes” ?; Cultural landscapes; Biodiversity, flowers … It is open whether the representation is naive, realistic, magical-realistic, metaphorical, symbolic or abstract – artistic implementation in every format and every technique as an individual or group contribution is welcome. Only one thing counts: the result should hang on the wall, regardless of whether it is a watercolor, relief or photo.

There were submissions from twelve schools in the district: eleven community pictures and around 60 individual projects. The jury met in October and was particularly impressed by 18 pictures that deserved special recognition. The jury included Susanne Werger-von Bergen (education authority of the district), district president Meinhard Füllner, Antje Ladiges-Specht (artist & forum culture & environment), Elisabeth von Meltzer (specialist advisor for nature and environmental education / education for sustainable development) and Jörg-Rüdiger Geschke (District Adviser for Cultural Education). The most interesting pictures selected by the jury will now be freely accessible in reproductions in public space on the Ratzeburg market square and exhibited in a pandemic-compatible manner. The competition is the first cooperation between the district advisory service for cultural education and the district specialist advisory service for nature and environmental education / education for sustainable development.

Pictures specially selected by the jury are from class 3d from Till-Eulenspiegelschule (TES) Mölln, class 4d from Weingartenschule Lauenburg, class 1b from elementary school Breitenfelde, from the individual artists Azra and Mareike (4c TES Mölln), Tjark (3b green school) St. Georgsberg Ratzeburg), Katharina Bethge (OHG Geesthacht), Hubertus, Luisa and Vanessa (MDG Mölln), Gustav, Lilly, Anne-Mette, Antonia Martje and Bente (3a elementary school Sterley).

The works can now be seen in the middle of the market square, printed in high resolution on large tarpaulins around the clock. “In addition to the Environment & Culture Forum, special thanks go to the photographer and graphic artist Jens Butz, without whose know-how and commitment this exhibition would not have been possible,” explains Geschke. Jens Butz took over the photography of the works of art as well as the creation and conception of the oversized banners. He is also preparing an accompanying brochure that will be distributed to the schools shortly. Gechke: “We would also like to thank the city of Ratzeburg and especially the building yard of our district town for the good cooperation.”

“I would like to congratulate the initiators,” said District President Meinhard Füllner, who praised this “splash of color” on the market square. In addition, the merging of art education and environmental education was solved in a wonderful and exemplary way.

“We as a city are beneficiaries of this district-wide exhibition,” said Mayor Gunnar Koech happily and praised this way of making culture public so that everyone can participate. “The exhibition concept is also conceivable for the future,” added Jörg-Rüdiger Geschke when asked by the Duchy directly. In this case, the Corona crisis had something good because other ideas had also come up.

The exhibition will also have a second part, a continuation, under the title “Art creates diversity” with the children’s art competition for more blooming landscapes in the Duchy of Lauenburg. Geschke: “So that blooming landscapes do not remain a vision, we want to further expand the network of flowering areas in the Duchy of Lauenburg and thus create valuable habitats for insects.” We are now looking for private initiatives, municipalities, private individuals and farmers, the areas for the creation of insect-friendly flowering meadows for three years or more. Multi-year blooming areas offer the advantage that bumblebees, butterflies and the like can overwinter and multiply. The areas should also be at least 1,000 square meters. Local wild seeds, which are adapted to the respective site conditions, are to be planted on these flowering areas next spring.

Seeds cost money. And the creation and maintenance of the areas is not free of charge. “We are therefore looking for people or companies who would like to sponsor a flower and finance the seeds for the flower areas and the maintenance of the areas through a donation”, calls out Jörg-Rüdiger Geschke, “So that art and diversity enter into dialogue, we will do so in the next Year, the works of art of the competition “Blooming Landscapes” will be exhibited again in the blooming areas. “On the occasion of the exhibition, a fund will be initiated that brings people together: those who provide areas free of charge for real” blooming landscapes “, namely wildflower or flowering meadows, and those who finance the seeds through a donation.

The children and youth artists in the exhibition may take on sponsorships for the flowering areas with their pictures. So in a year you will see that your art has brought colorful blossoms to the landscape.

Donations for colorful regional seeds can be transferred to the account of the school association of the community school Mölln eV: DE73 2305 2750 1000 0243 64
