In the first three months of his election campaign, Democratic presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg deposited nearly half a billion dollars into the bill of his campaign team, according to figures released by the US electoral commission. The billionaire, with a capital of around 53 billion dollars, had already indicated that he would finance his entire campaign himself and did not accept help from others.
For comparison: popular candidates such as Bernie Sanders, Joe Biden, Elizabeth Warren, Amy Klobuchar and Pete Buttigieg managed to collect less than four hundred million dollars throughout 2019.
The huge amount put Bloomberg in second place in a short time in the polls behind Senator Bernie Sanders, with more than 16 percent of voters. It didn’t bring him any electors yet: Bloomberg dropped the primaries in Iowa and New Hampshire to focus on his campaign.
He also does not participate in the primaries in Nevada, although he did participate in a debate. In it he was fiercely attacked by his political rivals on the night of Wednesday to Thursday, who criticized him with criticism from the American people: according to many, Bloomberg uses his money to gain power. He himself claims that he wants to redeem America from current President Donald Trump.
In this sense, Super Tuesday becomes important for Bloomberg to seize a leading position in the race. On March 3, Democratic voters in 14 US states can go to the polls. More than a third of all electors are at stake.
Trump did not spend a cent on re-election
That money cannot buy the all-important electors, according to the election campaign of Tom Steyer. The billionaire spent more than $ 200 million, but was unable to convert the money into results. He won 0.3 percent of the vote in the primaries in Iowa, after which rumors started that he would stop his campaign. That has not happened so far.
Trump, who received the same accusations during the 2016 presidential election as Bloomberg now receives, has not spent a cent on his re-election campaign. In fact, figures from the American electoral commission show that he has put almost two million dollars back in his own pocket.
