Bloomberg: Half of the G20 countries did not support sanctions against Russia

Half of the G20 countries did not support or impose large-scale sanctions against Russia because of the war in Ukraine. Senior Western officials have advocated a tough economic blockade of Russia and were surprised by the lack of agreement from many G20 countries, Bloomberg writes.

The largest economy that does not support economic pressure on Russia is China, the agency notes. Russia is also supported by India, Brazil, South Africa (the BRICS countries) and Turkey.

The lack of a unified position complicates the adoption of global measures against Russia, which Western countries advocate, for example limiting the price of Russian oil.

The American newspaper The Washington Post reported on Friday, citing Ukrainian intelligence that Russia is hoping for Turkey’s help in circumventing sanctions. This points to Moscow’s proposal, previously detected by Ukrainian intelligence the meeting between Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdoganwhich should be held on Friday in Sochi, the publication writes.

According to the intercepted messages, Turkey is being asked to allow the Russia to buy stakes in Turkish refineries, oil terminals and tanks. This can help hide the origin of the oil and circumvent sanctions, in particular the EU’s partial oil embargo.
