A new report from Bloomberg details today that Apple has transferred leadership of its autonomous car project to John Giannandrea, its senior vice president of machine learning and artificial intelligence strategy. According to the report, “hundreds of engineers” from Project Titan have switched to the artificial intelligence and machine learning group.
The report explains that Project Titan is run “day by day” by Doug Field and that “his team of hundreds of engineers has moved to Giannandrea’s artificial intelligence and machine learning group.” Previously, Field had reported Bob Mansfield.
Mansfield came out of retirement in 2016 to lead the Project Titan Apple Car team. Mansfield previously led Apple’s hardware team before moving to a special projects role where he worked on Apple Watch before retiring to an advisor position. , as reported in 2016.
Today’s Bloomberg report says that Mansfield “has now retired entirely from Apple” and that the leadership of Project Titan has now shifted to Giannandrea.
Previously, Field reported to Bob Mansfield, Apple’s former senior vice president of hardware engineering. Mansfield has now retired entirely from Apple, leading to Giannandrea taking over.

Apple has since removed some workers from the project, but continues to develop. In the past, the company has considered launching its own car, building the autonomous driving system for a car manufacturing partner, or designing an aftermarket kit that works with several different cars, the people said.
