Nothing beats eating a fresh watermelon on a hot summer day. Provided, of course, that it is ripe and sweet. But how do you recognize the optimal degree of maturity?
– In the supermarket you keep seeing people knocking on melons with their knuckles. Their tone is supposed to show whether the melon is ripe. However, that is not true. Instead of knocking off every single melon on the shelf, you should pay attention to the following tips:- The yellow spot on the peel is a sign that the watermelon has been in the sun for a long time. That means it has more aroma. Brown spots are also an indication that the melon tastes good. They show that bees were at work. If a watermelon is green all around, it is not yet ripe.
Weight also plays a role. Compare watermelons of similar size and choose the heaviest. The heavier the melon, the more ripe the fruit.
If you want to avoid cores, it is worth taking a look at the shape. A distinction is made between male and female melons. Female fruits are rounder and have significantly fewer seeds. In terms of taste, there is hardly any difference here.
