Blizzcon 2020 canceled, online event slated for early 2021 – News

The noise had been around for several weeks, but the case is now heard: the BlizzCon 2020 will not take place. Blizzard announced it this evening in a press release, which specifies however that an online event should take place a little later.

The fair dedicated to Blizzard and its games will therefore not be held in Anaheim during the first weekend in November. The reason, you know it: the current pandemic does not allow the organization to work serenely when setting up the BlizzCon. The fears of Saralyn Smith, the event’s executive producer, who announced in April than the event was put on hold, were therefore founded. In the communicated announcing the cancellation of the agreement in its physical form, we can read:

Several weeks ago, I shared an update on our uncertainty about holding BlizzCon this year. (…) We have had many discussions on what a convention might look like, in light of all the health and safety considerations we would like to put in place. We also talked about the different paths we could take and how each could be complicated by fluctuations in national and local health guidelines in the coming months. In the end, after considering our options, we made the very difficult decision not to maintain this year’s BlizzCon. (…)

We are discussing how we could channel the spirit of BlizzCon and offer it to you online. (…) We would like to do it as soon as possible, but given that this is new territory and that various factors come into play, it will probably be early next year.

Of course, all on-site competitions must be reorganized, and, as of this writing, the solutions have not been released. The cancellation of this BlizzCon is unfortunately not a surprise, the show adding to the very long list of events that had to be canceled, postponed, or changed to be able to stand in line.
