Previously Blinken was asked about the ongoing protests and riots across Kazakhstan during Friday’s press conference. He argues that the situation there is different from tensions in Russia’s other neighbour, Ukraine.
Even so, Blinken claims that Moscow may have ulterior motives in spearheading a joint security response to quell the violence.
“I think one lesson in recent history is that once Russians are in your house, sometimes it’s very difficult to get them to leave,” he said at the end of the news conference, without providing further details.

The comments sparked a sharp response from the Russian Foreign Ministry, which condemned Blinken. The US secretary of state was seen as taking lightly the “tragic events” that took place in the ex-Soviet country, where peaceful demonstrations initially linked to rising fuel prices quickly escalated into deadly clashes with security forces and arson, vandalism and looting.
“Today US Secretary of State Antony Blinken joked about the tragic events in Kazakhstan in his characteristically rude manner,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. Russia Today, Saturday (8/1/2022).
The Russian Foreign Ministry said that its peacekeeping efforts under the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) were absolutely legitimate.
