Danny Blind tipped Ajax about Khvicha Kvaratskhelia a year ago. This is what the former commissioner of the Amsterdam club says in the broadcast of Ziggo Sport. Shortly after that tip, the 22-year-old Georgian attacker left for Napoli, which makes it questionable whether Ajax would have had a chance at all.
“He’s a great player,” Blind begins his analysis of the Napoli striker. According to the former Ajax player, Kvaratskhelia can join clubs such as Bayern Munich and Real Madrid. “Serie A is no longer the best league, but there are still nice defenders. He just has great action, but also the discipline to think like a team player. He shifts well. Napoli is an incredible unit.’
In the past, Kvaratskhelia would have been offered to Ajax. Blind is asked about it. ‘I do know that John van ‘t Schip, with whom I am friends, once pointed out to me. He had played against him with the national team of Greece and then Kvaratskhelia noticed him. I reported it to Ajax, but two days later it came out that he had an agreement with Napoli. I don’t know if there was any contact for that.’

Around the Champions League matches between Ajax and Napoli in the autumn, Shota Arveladze indicated that Kvaratskhelia was offered to Ajax. He said in De Telegraaf at the time: ‘He was offered in the last winter transfer window, but the time was too short and the price of fifteen million euros was too high. His statistics at Lokomotiv Moscow were not that good. Ajax wanted to pay nine to twelve million euros. In the end, Napoli bought him for ten million euros. That’s how it goes sometimes.’
