claim
A wide forest path leads to the Rosskopf. The only dangerous element are the mountain bikers, whose trails cross the path several times on the descent.
Directions
From many cities there is a train connection to Freiburg without changing trains. Further on foot or by public transport to the center.
starting point
The hike to the Rosskopf starts and ends at the Schwabentor, right in the center of Freiburg.
Retreat
On the descent, the irresistible beer garden of the St. Ottilien restaurant tempts you to stop off. From April to October, old chestnuts are used to eat salads, tarte flambées or specialties such as Brägele, the local fried potato variant (st-ottilien.com).
Best time
All year round. In winter you should inquire in advance whether there is snow on the summit.
map
The compass map »Freiburg and the surrounding area«, on a scale of 1: 25000, from EUR 9.99 shows the route.
Info
Tourist-Information (visit.freiburg.de) and Schwarzwaldverein (Tel. 0761/380530, schwarzwaldverein.de) will help with any questions.
outdoor tip
If the hike is too long, you can descend from the Rosskopfsattel via the chapel St. Wendelin to the Hirschenhofweg bus stop and from there take bus 18 (to Littenweiler) and tram line 1 back to the center (approx. 20 minutes with a change). This saves you a good hour of the way back.
route
From the Schwabentor you first climb steeply to Kanonenplatz and take the right path there. It leads past the Schlossberg tower and slightly downhill to a pavilion. There the Rosskopf is signposted again. After a short distance on a fitness trail, cross a forest road and from here follow the markings on the Kandelhöhenweg, a white K on a red background. The forest path now rises pleasantly evenly and then flows into a gravel road that leads up to the Rosskopf (737 m). For a panoramic view of the summit, climb the 34-meter high steel Friedrichsturm. Now you have a view of the Rhine Valley, the Vosges and, if the weather is clear, you can even see the Alps to the south. Here a sign shows the way to the St. Wendelin chapel. A blocked sign rightly warns against hiking down the mountain bike descent. And you should also be careful on the way, because the bike trail crosses it several times. At the chapel St. Wendelin you can pause on a bench or descend the last piece to the St. Ottilien restaurant. From there you return to the Schlossberg on a fairly flat forest path: Florian Sanktjohanser
