Black boxes of crashed Indonesian plane found off Java coast | NOW

The Indonesian authorities have found the black boxes of the Boeing 737-500 dumped at sea off the coast of Java. The plane with 62 passengers suddenly disappeared from the radar on Saturday four minutes after take-off.

Emergency services previously found body parts and debris where the plane disappeared from the radar. Pieces of an inflatable slide, cables, a piece of jeans and personal belongings were found.

Sriwijaya Air flight SJ182 departed on Saturday at 1.40 pm local time (7.40 am Dutch time) from Jakarta in the direction of Pontianak, an Indonesian city about 700 kilometers away. The flight would take approximately 1.5 hours.

However, four minutes after departure, the aircraft disappeared from the radar. The last contact with the crew took place only 20 kilometers from the airport, when the plane was flying over the sea.

The website Flightradar reports that the plane lost more than 3,300 meters in height in less than a minute. It is still unclear what exactly happened.
