Bizarre and Creative Russian Military Improvements: Tankensteins, Shushpanzers, and More

In the West they are called “tankensteins”, and in the Russian Internet – “shushpanzers” or “wunderwafe”. In reality, these are tailor-made improvements, with which the Russian military tries to strengthen the protection of the antediluvian weapons that they received from the warehouses. The result is amateur or even serial armored vehicles, either amazing or ugly, and sometimes both, of questionable value on the battlefield.

Sometimes the models are simple – an old van, “armored” with improvised materials and equipped with a machine gun on the roof.

Other times they are absurd – a body of MT-LBU on a chassis with wheels. After clever finishing, it can serve for the transport of personnel, as well as for a collective coffin.

At first glance, this is the most ordinary “KamAZ” with details from the long-ago “retired” MT-LB. But this is not just a truck, but a Russian radio electronic warfare system 9-Р34B «Sinitsa».

Tanks and other machines are donated en masse with … wood.

MT-LB with marine machine gun. Such machine guns were on the torpedo boats that were used from 1939 to 1953.

A hybrid between the MT-LB and the APC (with heroic protection). On the MT-LB, they put a roof similar to that of the BTR-82A, as well as additional protective screens with cartoon characters depicted on them.

An “armored” vehicle for volunteers, painted in tactical paint so as not to be seen from afar. How much it keeps is another matter.

Finally – the winner of the competition best “barbecue” – these are the roofs that protect against grenades from the sky. Almost all Russian tanks and weapon systems are equipped with anti-drone systems.
