Exactly two months ago – on November 10 – bitcoin set a new record. At that time, the exchange rate climbed to $ 68,990 (CZK 1,486,480). Since then, however, the most famous cryptocurrency in the world has been almost constantly lost.

Last week, the slump was caused by the tense situation in Kazakhstan. In the middle of the week, the global computing power of the bitcoin network dropped sharply as virtually all of Kazakhstan disconnected from the global Internet. At the same time, this Central Asian republic is one of the countries with the most cryptocurrencies.

The development of the bitcoin exchange rate has traditionally been copied by other cryptocurrencies, such as ethereum. At the beginning of the year, it sold for $ 3,725 (CZK 80,240), on Tuesday it was only for $ 3,215 (CZK 69,260), and on Sunday only for $ 3,800 (CZK 64,800). The ethereum started the new week at a rate of $ 3,145 (CZK 67,750).

Bitcoins and other virtual currencies

There are many virtual currencies. One of the oldest and currently most popular are the so-called bitcoins. They were established in 2009, but have enjoyed greater popularity in recent years. This currency was designed so that it could not be influenced by any government or central bank.

Cyber coins are “minting” a network of computers with specialized software programmed to release new coins at a steady but declining pace. The number of coins in circulation is expected to reach 21 million in the end, which is to be around 2140.
