billions of fake listens detected

A recent report commissioned by the Ministry of Culture in France revealed massive fraud in the online music streaming industry reports The Parisian. The report, produced by the National Music Center (CNM) in collaboration with the Deezer, Spotify and Qobuz platforms, discovered that between one and three billion false plays were detected in France in 2021.

According to figures provided by the companies, 2.6% of listens on Deezer, 1.1% on Spotify and 1.6% on Qobuz were false listens. This massive fraud has significant consequences on the remuneration of artists and this practice has increased in 2022.

These scams are perpetrated through computer networks that use fake accounts and stolen bank cards to play titles on streaming platforms. The most popular artists are not the most affected by these false listenings, but this has consequences on the remuneration of the artists.
