Investor calls for a return to meritocracy in education
Billionaire investor Kenneth Griffin, founder of US hedge fund Citadel, made a powerful plea to his alma mater, Harvard University, to embrace “Western values” in education. In an interview with the Financial Times, Griffin highlighted the turmoil seen across college campuses and referred to it as a “cultural revolution” in US education.
Griffin voiced his concern, stating that the US had lost its focus on education as a means to pursue truth and acquire knowledge over the past decade. He called on Harvard to put the mission of meritocracy in America at the forefront and to embrace Western values, which have played a crucial role in the nation’s success.
Halting donations over concerns of anti-Semitism
Griffin, a dedicated philanthropist who has donated over half a billion dollars to Harvard University, has previously expressed his objections to how the institution handled anti-Semitism on campus. As a result, he put a stop to his donations to the school in January.
Griffin believes that the current atmosphere on American campuses is a manifestation of the cultural revolution in education coursing through the paradigm of the oppressor and the oppressed. He emphasized that the protests seen on college campuses are almost like “performative art” and that freedom of speech should not be used as a license to engage in destructive conduct. “That’s not freedom of speech. That’s just anarchy,” he argued.
Crackdown on pro-Palestinian activists
This plea from Griffin comes amidst the arrests of numerous pro-Palestinian activists at universities in the United States. These activists have been voicing their demands for a cease-fire in Israel’s incursion into Gaza, as well as calling for their schools to divest from companies associated with Israel.
According to The Appeal, a nonprofit news organization, at least 2,600 demonstrators have been detained across the nation at over 100 protests in 39 states and Washington, D.C. These widespread protests signify the depth of the current issues arising from the cultural revolution within American universities.

Ken Griffin, who started trading in his Harvard dormitory, has been vocal about his criticisms of America’s prestigious universities. He blames the push towards a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) agenda for the diminishing quality of education.
