It will always stick to Bilal Wahib: that evening in March when he asked an underage boy during a live session on Instagram to show his genitals. The next day everyone dropped him hard, even his own record label Top Notch. Somewhat hypocritical, because there is quite a lot of scum is under contract.

PR employee intervenes

Despite everything, Bilal has released a new album on Top Notch. “It has to be contractually,” he tells Volkskrant Magazine.

The interviewer then: “That doesn’t sound enthusiastic.”

Bilal’s PR manager: “Rather not about Top Notch.”

Bilal doesn’t care: “I can hear that, I really don’t care. You can just ask.”

“I’m leaving right there!”

Top Notch has spoiled it with Bilal. “As soon as the contract expires, I’ll be gone. I’m very sure about that, they were about me too. They immediately released a statement the next day without speaking to me. You don’t do that with someone who has a contract with you.”

He continues: “I don’t blame the media, that’s just how it goes, they want juice, well, most of them. But as a record company you don’t treat someone under contract like that. Have a conversation first, then you can say whatever you want.”

De Volkskrant also wants to know from Bilal whether he thinks his Moroccan roots have to do with his severe punishment. “Those are rumours, but I don’t really believe in them. I’m adored,” he says.

He just made a stupid mistake, Bilal said. Though he didn’t see it right away. “I thought it was really funny at the time. But then I started thinking: this was actually not very smart. Some jokes you just shouldn’t make.”
