Retail chain Big Bazar has payment arrears in Belgium. A creditor has reported to Collection Company Amsterdam with an outstanding account of 20,000 euros. Big Bazar went bankrupt in the Netherlands last year.
The creditor supplied bedroom textiles to Big Bazar but was never paid. In addition to this debt claim of 20,000 euros, there is also a lawsuit from a recruitment agency against parent company Big Bazar Holding. Big Bazar hired IT professionals, but has not yet paid for them. According to Collections Company Amsterdam, the amount is more than 80,000 euros.
There are still ten Big Bazar stores open in Belgium. Last September, the Dutch branch was declared bankrupt. CEO Heerke Kooistra has made several attempts to save the company from collapse, including by putting the Belgian stores up for sale. The rescue efforts came to nothing. The collection agency takes into account that more creditors will come knocking on behalf of Big Bazar Belgium.
A lot of media attention for bankruptcy
Oscar van Oorschot, lawyer for Big Bazar, criticizes the media attention that has arisen around Big Bazar. According to him, this has only increased the financial problems of the bargain chain. It is not in the interest of its customers that Indrachtsbedrijf Amsterdam seeks out the media, according to Van Oorschot. Due to the bankruptcy in the Netherlands, they never saw their money again, the lawyer believes.
According to Joost Konings, director of Invoeringsbedrijf Amsterdam, the media attention has nothing to do with his company’s working methods. According to Konings, this is the result “of structurally leaving debts unpaid”.
