Biden Urges Congress for Emergency Action as Ukraine Suffers Deadly Air Attack

“Unless Congress takes emergency steps next year, we will not be able to continue sending the weapons and vital air defense systems that Ukraine needs to protect its people,” Biden said in a statement, calling on Congress to act “without any further delay.”

In the largest air attack on Ukraine since the start of the Russian military operation, a missile attack claimed the lives of 18 civilians and injured more than 130, while targeting residential buildings in areas including the capital, Kiev, and the south and west of the country.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said the massive air attack coming at the end of the year showed there should be no “talk of a truce” with the Kremlin, at a time of uncertainty over the future of vital Western support for Kiev.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said, “Today (Friday) millions of Ukrainians woke up to the sound of loud explosions. I wish the world could hear the sounds of explosions in Ukraine.” He called on his country’s allies to support it militarily in the long term.

For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on the X platform: “Russia has used almost all types of weapons in its arsenal.”

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that 158 missiles and drones were launched at Ukraine, of which 114 were destroyed.

For his part, British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps announced on Friday that Britain will send about 200 air defense missiles to Ukraine after a series of intense Russian strikes.
