Radio Station Faces Backlash

A US radio station, previously known for its dedication to country music, recently found itself entangled in a controversy after refusing to play a Beyoncé song upon a listener’s request. KYKC-FM, based in Oklahoma, received criticism from a fan for their response, which insinuated that the station doesn’t play Beyoncé because it focuses solely on country music.

Allegations of Racism and Discrimination

The listener, expressing dissatisfaction with KYKC’s response, accused the station of promoting “racism and discrimination.” The incident gained significant attention when the fan’s post, including the station’s reply, was shared on social media and swiftly went viral.

Station Manager Acknowledges Mistake

Subsequently, the station manager of KYKC recognized the gravity of the situation, making amends. In a statement, Roger Harris, a general manager for South Central Oklahoma Radio Enterprises, which oversees KYKC, admitted that the station had no previous knowledge of Beyoncé’s recent country music ventures. Harris highlighted that their response was a standard, albeit inadequate, reply. He also clarified that KYKC is a small station and often does not have access to music from major labels.

Beyoncé Recognized as an Icon

Emphasizing their stance, Harris labeled Beyoncé an “icon” and expressed well wishes for her foray into country music. The controversy shed light on the notion that artists should not be confined to specific genres or formats, with Harris reinforcing the belief that if music is good, it should be appreciated regardless of labels and categories.

Change of Heart and Inclusion

Following an influx of emails, calls, and requests for the Beyoncé song in question, the station promptly found and listened to the track. Ultimately, the station staff admitted that it possessed distinct country music elements. As a result, KYKC added the song not only to its country music playlist but also to the playlists of two other stations under the South Central Oklahoma Radio Enterprises banner.

Beyoncé’s Success in the Country Music Arena

The song in question gained notable popularity within a short span of time. Despite being released only a week ago, it has already surpassed nine million plays on Spotify and garnered over 900,000 views on YouTube.
