Beware of Low Emission Zones while traveling this Easter in Spain

This Wednesday the operation out of Easter starts. Some dates in which it is expected that there will be up to 5,550,000 long-distance and internal displacements on the roads of Valencia, Castellón and Alicante during this second phase of the holidays.

On this occasion, drivers will have to pay special attention to the road but also to the areas where they put the car in the different cities they visit for the holidays. And it is that since the beginning of the year in some Spanish towns restrictions have been implemented due to the Low Emission Zones.

A total of 149 Spanish cities are affected by the obligation to have LEZs this year, a measure that has a full impact on the circulation of at least 3.7 million cars (more than 30%) without an environmental badge, which roll through its streets, three out of ten cars. A figure that could be even higher due to the vehicles registered in other smaller municipalities that on occasion have the need to go to large cities.

In this sense, towns with more than 50,000 inhabitants are obliged to implement the LEZ. Some areas where vehicles will not be able to access if they lack an environmental label, that is, registered before January 1, 2001 in the case of gasoline and 2006 if they are diesel (it may vary depending on the corresponding label). And not only that, it also applies to those municipalities with more than 20,000 inhabitants that exceed the limit values of pollutants regulated in the Royal Decree on air quality.

In the event of entering an area of this type without adequate accreditation, in general terms, a penalty of 200 euros is contemplated (with a 50% reduction, 100 euros, in case of paying within 20 days), although some town halls are fixing smaller sanctions, of 100 euros. It is key to know if it should be available or not, something that can be consulted on the official website of the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT).

These are the cities where the sticker should be mandatory this Easter, although there may be variations since many of them have not yet applied the measure.
