Recognizing the warning signs early is essential to prevent permanent liver damage. Intake of too many calories is a major cause of fat accumulation in the liver. That is why fatty liver disease often coexists with other conditions, such as obesity, diabetes and triple high cholesterol.

The accumulation of fat in the liver is harmful, as it gradually impairs liver function and eventually, scarring of the liver can lead to permanent liver obstruction.

There are several warning signs on your face that could indicate you have fatty liver disease, according to the websites “express” and “timesofindia.”

Facial swelling:

The liver breaks down hormones such as aldosterone, which can lead to fluid retention if allowed to build up.

So when viewed under a microscope, the liver looks like a giant filter or “sieve” that filters toxins, hormones, unhealthy cells, and metabolic waste products from the bloodstream.

White spots on the tongue:

The tongue is also a strong indicator of a healthy liver, as it can reflect problems in the digestive system.

When there is too much yeast in the intestines or the liver becomes sluggish, it can cause white patches to form on the tongue.

Research published in the International Journal of Gastroenterology Pharmacotherapy in 2020 suggests that tongue thickness could be another indicator of liver health.

The researchers noted that tongue thickness was significantly associated with liver disease severity.

Spider Veins:

Or what is known as broken blood vessels on the face, threadlike veins, or redness, which is telangiectasia.

Sometimes they appear when blood flow becomes slow and the blood becomes cloudy, which leads to increased pressure in the veins.

An increase in estrogen also occurs in liver disease, another cause of varicose veins.

Yellowing of the skin and swelling of the legs, ankles and feet are more likely in advanced stages of liver disease.

itchy skin

Research indicates that liver disease can increase levels of bile salts, which can build up under the skin and, in turn, cause itching.

Yellowing of the eyes:

A common explanation for yellowing of the skin or eyes is an increased level of bilirubin in the body, a yellow pigment secreted by the liver. It is commonly called jaundice and needs immediate treatment once diagnosed.
