Beware if you often experience GERD, these 3 types of cancer can haunt you

Suara.com – A new study finds gastric acid reflux which occurs frequently and involves heartburn, can be a risk factor for cancer of the esophagus and larynx.

In studies published in journals Cancer on February 22 last, as many as 17% two of a kind esophageal cancer and larynx associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Researchers in this study want to strengthen the evidence that GERD is a risk factor for esophageal adenocarcinoma.

“We found GERD was associated with an increased risk of esophageal and laryngeal squamous cells,” said study author Christian C. Abnet, head of the Branch of Metabolic Epidemiology, Division of Epidemiology and Genetics. Cancer at the National Cancer Institute (NCI).

GERD is believed to increase the risk of esophageal cancer because the acid that is vomited from the stomach can irritate and damage the lining of the esophagus. This acid can also reach the larynx, where the vocal cords are located, and cause irritation and hoarseness.

For this study Abnet examined 490,605 data from adults who took part in the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study.

He estimated that 24% of people in the data had a history of GERD, reports Very Well Health.

Then the researchers examined the incidence of three types of esophageal cancer, namely esophageal adenocarcinoma, laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma, and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

The results found that 2,108 participants had cancer of the esophagus or larynx from 1995 to 2011.

Of these, 931 had esophageal adenocarcinoma, 876 had laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma, and 301 had esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.
