Your mouth is a thriving ecosystem.Bacteria and other organisms come when you eat, drink and breathe. Most of the time, a delicate balance is maintained in the mouth’s ecosystem, but problems can arise when certain strains of bacteria become excessive as is the case in type diabetes 2.
According to the British National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, glucose is in your saliva – the fluid in your mouth that makes it wet, according to the British newspaper Express.
The site continued: “When diabetes is not controlled, high levels of glucose in saliva help the growth of harmful bacteria, and these bacteria combine with food to form a thin sticky layer called plaque.”
Plaque also comes from eating foods that contain sugars or starches, some types of plaque cause tooth decay, other types of plaque cause gum disease and bad breath.
Plaque carries bacteria that can damage tooth enamel and lead to tooth decay, but if you remove plaque regularly, you can prevent permanent tooth decay and gum disease.
Bigger problems arise, however, if plaque remains on your teeth and hardens into tartar, which forms below and above the gum line.
Left untreated, diabetes can have a negative effect on your mouth as well.
Oral conditions that can arise from untreated type 2 diabetes include:
You may have less saliva, which makes your mouth feel dry.
Since saliva protects your teeth, you are also at greater risk of cavities.
The gums may become inflamed and bleed a lot.
You may have problems tasting food.
You may experience a delay in wound healing.
You may be susceptible to infections inside your mouth.
For children with diabetes, teeth may erupt at a young age than usual.
You should contact your dentist if you:
You suffer from bleeding or inflammation of the gums.
You get infected a lot.
Bad breath does not go away.
Most of the time, plaque is colorless or pale yellow in color.
A dentist can detect plaque on your teeth using a small mirror during an oral examination.
A person can remove plaque by brushing and flossing their teeth regularly with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
Studies have shown that using a toothpaste containing baking soda is a good way to get rid of plaque, and this hardened layer of tartar can also be removed by a dentist.
