Beverly Hills / BH90210: an impossible season 2, the reasons for the shutdown

Express return for BH90210 this Wednesday July 29 on TF1. The private channel broadcasts the entire first season before Magnum takes over.

This Wednesday, July 29, 2020 from 9:05 p.m., TF1 will rebroadcast the entire first season of the BH90210 series, the reboot of the flagship series of the 90s, Beverly Hills 90210. For the first time, the premium channel switches as a bonus a series offer already offered ten months ago on its TNT channel, TMC.

This single season of BH90210 consists of six 42-minute episodes. It features several main actors in the cult series of Aaron Spelling and Darren Star, Beverly Hills 90210 such as Jason Priestley, Shannen Doherty or Jennie Garth and Ian Ziering. As a reminder, the original series spanned ten years on Fox between 1990 and 2000.

On Wednesday, August 7, 2019, the American chain FOX launched BH90210, 19 years after the end of the Beverly Hills 90210 series. This launch was followed by 3.86 million curious across the Atlantic, or 1.5% among 19-49 year olds. The following week, the channel suffered a significant loss with 2.52 million viewers and 1% on targets. In total, the six episodes were followed by 2.38 million followers and 0.9% of 18-49 year olds.

FOX then determined that the scores were insufficient and decided not to follow up on the reboot of the 90s series Beverly Hills 90210. A real disappointment, especially for Jennie Garth and Tori Spelling, at the initiative of this comeback.

On Sunday, November 10, 2019, TMC aired the first three episodes of BH90210. From 9:05 p.m. to 11:35 p.m., the intrigues aroused the curiosity of an average of 730,000 curious, or 3.8% of the public aged four and over.

Then, on Sunday November 17, 2019, the TF1 group channel aired the last three episodes. This new salvo had been able to count on the presence on average of 527,000 faithful, that is to say 2.8% of market share among the four years and more. A clear erosion of audience for the series which however managed to retain a good part of the privileged targets.

This Wednesday, July 29, 2020, TF1 will rebroadcast the entire series on a transversal evening allowing fans to follow Brenda, Brandon, Donna, Kelly and the others until 2.20 am. This summer programming in the second broadcast window, unimaginable a few years ago, follows the drastic reduction in TF1’s grid costs.

BH90210 is inserted between the end of season 1 of Prodigal Son and the return of Magnum on August 5th. Indeed, the front page will wind up season 2 of the series with Jay Hernandez due to audiences at half mast during his last appearance on the grid last March. To the delight of fans, three new episodes will be broadcast, in total disorder, each week.

In the meantime, the Beverly Hills revival will have to try to attract crowds after the last setbacks of TF1 in prime time such as The tourists, The 100 greatest or even Camping Paradis.
