Bessan – Civic education classes with elected municipal officials in elementary school

Citizen initiatives are numerous in the locality. They have just taken on a new form thanks to the close partnership built between the city and the teachers of the Victor Hugo elementary school. Under the leadership of Marie-Laure Lledos, first deputy delegate for civic life, and as part of the civic education courses led by the teachers, meetings with elected municipal officials were recently held in the classrooms.

For several weeks, a dozen elected officials took turns to intervene in five classes with the main objective of explaining the role and missions of the mayor and municipal councilors to the children who had previously prepared numerous questions with their teachers. For his part, the first magistrate will officially receive the children concerned at the town hall by the end of the school year in order to discover the town hall.

The meetings in the classes allowed the schoolchildren to ask very relevant questions (how long the mandate lasts, when was the town hall built or how decisions are made) but also sometimes very amusing questions asking for example if the mayor lived in the town hall. This allowed these budding citizens to get a more concrete idea of the mission of elected officials and more generally of the city.

The teachers, after having thanked the municipal councilors or deputy mayors mobilized for this original citizen operation, will continue civic education around the local actions carried out by the town hall, a local authority which meets the primary needs of the population on a daily basis, including those of the kindergarten as well as the elementary school, of first municipal competence.
