Together with her brother-in-law Arild and baby, Bertine was at the Invictus Games to support her wife and participant Fenna Geugjes. Prince Harry is the creator and patron of the sporting event. Yesterday they were at the opening ceremony. Wheelchair basketball player Fenna was one of the athletes who got to meet the royals with her family.
Busy with the baby
Bertine was not nervous about the meeting. “I was mainly busy with Liva. We were there a few hours before we met Harry and Meghan, so I was busy feeding her some more, that sort of thing.” The presence of Bertine as well as baby Liva and Geugjes’ brother is typical of the Invictus Games.
“The idea really is that you live it together with friends and family. You’ve all been through a rough time and this event is where everyone can come together and share experiences. That’s what the Invictus Games are all about.”

Finally, around half past four, Harry and Meghan arrive. Behind closed doors, the van Geugjes family has a brief chat. “We got acquainted briefly and had to wait a little longer before we would go outside together,” says Bertine.

“At one point I must have walked outside, because music was being rehearsed inside and there was quite a lot of noise.” It had cooled down a bit and Bertine’s coat was in a bag that she couldn’t reach at the time.

During the round that the group then walks outside, there is more chatter. “We talked about her children for a while and she asked how old Liva was. She said she was cute and gave her attention.”
