The German dance scene reacted happily to the decision announced the day before yesterday to place Berlin’s techno culture on the national heritage list.

The decision was taken by Culture Minister Claudia Roth and a council of cultural figures from the states. The Clubcommission Berlin, a cooperative body of club owners and festival organizers, among others, applauds the decision.

The organization called the recognition “a further milestone for the scene”, the German broadcaster reports ZDF. “While operas, theaters and concert halls have always been recognized as part of culture, music clubs have struggled to be taken for granted as a full-fledged part of culture.”

Innovation

One of the driving forces behind techno culture in Berlin is Dimitri Hegemann, who opened club Tresor in 1991, one of the most famous clubs in the world. He thinks it is “an appreciation for our work”, he says Berliner Zeitung.

According to him, the music style represents innovation. “There are no lyrics or melody”. He was born in West Germany and ended up in West Berlin where the genre became popular. “It reached many people, including the youth in the Eastern Bloc. It was the sound of reunification.”

City for techno lovers

Berlin is internationally known as the city for techno lovers. In the 1990s, the Love Parade was held there: a festival with DJs on moving trucks that attracted many thousands of people. A similar festival has been held in Berlin for two years now under the name Rave The Planet. It attracted around 200,000 visitors last year.

The biggest attraction for techno lovers in Berlin at the moment is the Berghain club, but clubs such as KitKat and Kater Blau also attract many visitors. According to Clubcommission Berlin, more than 3 million people come to Berlin every year to go to techno parties.

Hip hop culture

The German cultural list is compiled by a heritage committee affiliated with UNESCO. What is on the German list also has a chance of ending up on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The German heritage list now includes 150 customs and local cultural traditions. The list includes, for example, hip-hop culture in Heidelberg, the Rhenish Carnival and the breeding of Trakehner horses.

Since Wednesday, in addition to Berlin’s techno culture, this has also included making wine from apples, pears or quinces in the Moselle region and the Kirchseeoner Perchtenlauf in the state of Bavaria. Masked figures ring in the new year with a parade.
