Berlin can overtake Munich in ten years, says SPD candidate Giffey

BFrom the point of view of the SPD candidate for the office of governing mayor, Franziska Giffey, erlin can move up to one of the leading economic centers in Germany. “I do believe that in the next ten years we will be able to overtake significantly other locations such as Munich – as a business location, as a technology location, as a location for innovation,” said Giffey of the German Press Agency.

She referred to the startup scene in the capital and the rise of several Berlin companies in the leading German stock exchange index Dax.

At a good 40,000 euros per capita, Berlin’s gross domestic product was recently around half that of Munich, according to the Federal Statistical Office. Up until the Corona crisis, however, the federal capital had experienced a significant upswing and for years had grown more economically than the national average, and since 2014 more strongly than Munich.

“A vision that says Berlin is better than Bavaria”

There is one point where Berlin should not become like Munich, Giffey clarified: the level of rents. “We don’t want that.” Here, too, innovative solutions are necessary in order to maintain an affordable and fair city, said the SPD politician. “That would be nice: a vision that says Berlin is better than Bavaria.”
