In the wake of the death of handball legend Bengt “Bengan” Johansson, media from all over the world gather around the blue screen-shining campfire where they share the news and pay tribute to the legend. Here comes a selection.
The news of Bengt Johansson’s death echoed yesterday in Scandinavia in the morning before the word spread through Europe. In Serbian Republic it is written about the “LEGENDAREN’S” death in capital letters and begins with a story about “Gurkburken”, which I guess is one of the few times that Swedish words get a place in Serbian news.
In Croatia writes index.hr about Bengt Johansson’s merits from the Swedish national team and that they themselves, the Croatian national team, took the medal he never received – the Olympic gold from Atlanta in 1996.
Hungarian Origo gives a brief account of Bengan’s player career, his time in HK Drott and goes on to tell about the coach’s educations in sociology and psychology.
Poland Eurosport includes a quote from Bengt Johansson’s son Petter in his interview with Aftonbladet and ends the text by referring to “Bengan Boys”.
France West France makes a point that “Bengan” took the boys to big finals 11 times in 16 years. They also mention Johansson’s 194 centimeters in length and 84 international matches as a player.
In Germany, there is a bunch of articles online, including German Eurosport has a longer text, with sad black graphics, and with quotes from the German Handball Federation’s president Andreas Michelmann from his interview with Der Spiegel.
“Bengan Boys was one of the great success stories in handball. From a German perspective, the European Championship final from 2002, which we lost in overtime, is unforgettable. Johansson shaped Swedish and international handball for several generations. “, Sawyer Michelmann till Der Spiegel.
Very sad day for international handball.
Swedish legend, Bengt Johansson, coach of the “𝑩𝒆𝒏𝒈𝒂𝒏 𝑩𝒐𝒚𝒔” who led Sweden to the top of world handball has passed away.
Our thoughts are with his family, friends and many supporters around the world.
