The introduction of a deposit system will be a matter before the end of 2025. Flemish Environment Minister Zuhal Demir (N-VA) said this in parliament on Tuesday after questions from Mieke Schauvliege (Green) and Steve Vandeberghe (Vooruit).

Negotiators from the European Parliament and EU member states agreed last week on reducing packaging waste. Member States must collect at least 90 percent of plastic bottles and drinks cans separately by 2029. To do this, they must introduce a deposit system, unless they already have another system in place that ensures that they will achieve the target.

Demir pointed out on Tuesday that this is a provisional agreement that still needs to be finalized. Once that has happened, she first wants to carefully examine the text legally. In addition, the minister says he is still waiting for the Walloon study. “Because I want to introduce a system that is in line with the other regions.”

According to Demir, it will take 12 to 15 months after the decision to introduce a deposit system, traditional or digital. “The introduction is therefore more likely to occur before the end of 2025.”

“I’m disappointed, I really don’t see any decisiveness anymore,” Steve Vandenberghe responded. “I never thought that an N-VA minister would hide behind Wallonia to avoid making decisions.”

Mieke Schauvliege pointed out that it has already almost been decided in Brussels to introduce a classic system.

“Whether Minister Alain Maron said something in parliament, I don’t care,” Demir responded. “With all due respect, but Mr. Maron is not going to make policy in Flanders. Who is Mr. Maron?”
