Belgian boy of five ‘accidentally’ shoots sister in the head | Abroad

According to the public prosecutor of Liège, Damien Leboutte, the firearm was “completely legally” in the possession of the father of the two children, Het Nieuwsblad among others writes. The man is said to be a sports shooter. Friday morning around 11.45 am, the boy would have gotten hold of the firearm in some way, after which it went off. The parents of the children were not in the room at the time, Leboutte told RTBF.

When the parents heard the gunshot and entered the room, they found their daughter on the floor with a wound to the head. Leboutte confirmed to the French-language newspaper La Dernière Heure that the 5-year-old boy was holding the gun in his hand at the time.

The weapon in question is a Czech 9mm CZ38 military pistol. According to RTBF, the special feature of this is that it can be loaded and fired with a single pull of the trigger. The father bought the firearm last year in a gun shop in Liège. He usually kept it in a sealed box. Investigation must show how it ended up in the hands of the 5-year-old boy.
