Beijing tightens measures against omikron variant

The corona rules are being tightened in the Chinese capital Beijing. Residents will need a negative corona test from the end of next week for access to public buildings and public transport.

The country is about to embark on a short holiday for Labor Day on May 1. This is normally one of the busiest holiday periods, but it is expected that many people will stay at home now that the contagious omikron variant is spreading.

China reports more than 10,700 new corona cases today, 54 of which in Beijing. Unlike Shanghai, the capital does not have a large-scale lockdown.

Millions of residents have been locked up in Shanghai for weeks. According to the authorities, a boost is that no new cases have been discovered within the group of people who are in lockdown. That could be an indication that the number of infections is declining.
