Bednárik is the new head of Czech Railways, he replaced Nebeský

Slovak native Bednárik should also take over the position of CEO of ČD. According to the Minister of Transport Karel Havlíček (for YES), the changes should strengthen the company in times of crisis.

“As a long-term Chairman of the Board of Directors of ČD Cargo, Ivan Bednárik has proven that he has the key prerequisites to carry out Czech Railways in the coming challenging phase,” said Pavel Kysilka, Chairman of the Supervisory Board.

“The national carrier suffered losses in the order of billions of crowns as a result of the covid-19 pandemic. Now he has to find ways to maintain and strengthen his financial position and continue with a demanding investment program and improving the quality of his services, “he added.

Nebeský has been at the head of the state carrier since last September. However, he remains in the management and will move to the position of Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Since 1995, Bednárik has held managerial positions in several companies dealing with trade and forwarding. Prior to joining ČD Cargo, he was a member of the Board of Directors and sales director of the Slovak Express Group, which belongs to a group of companies around the important Slovak businessman Alexei Belyaev.

Czech Railways recorded a loss of almost two billion crowns in the first half of this year due to the coronavirus crisis. For the whole of this year, the company expects to lose fare revenue for more than three billion crowns.

The Czech Railways group consists of passenger carriers and ČD Cargo freight. The group also includes the Railway Research Institute, a provider of ČD Telematika data services or a provider of ČD Information Systems ICT services. The group employs around 23,500 people.
