Becerril de la Sierra: 11 deaths from covid in a residence in Madrid that escaped the virus in the first wave | Madrid

A Madrid residence that escaped the first wave of covid-19 and was in the process of being vaccinated with the Pfizer formula has suffered 11 deaths from the virus, the authorities of the Community of Madrid reported this Friday. The residence is Vigor, in Becerril de la Sierra, which has suffered the blow of the British variant, the Deputy Minister of Public Health and head of the covid plan, Antonio Zapatero, said at a press conference. According to Zapatero, the outbreak began on January 7 and has affected 65 people between workers and employees. Four patients are admitted to the Collado Villalba hospital, two in critical condition.

An employee of the residence has explained to this newspaper that the Red Cross had already put the first doses of the Pfizer vaccine. “The first vaccination came and suddenly the outbreak appeared,” he said on the phone. “We have not had anything in 11 months,” he lamented. Achieving immunity with the Pfizer vaccine requires two doses and a waiting period of one more week. The Community Health Council is investigating the origin of the outbreak and a first hypothesis suggests that it is the British strain, according to Zapatero.

Vigor is a 51-bed private residence located in the Sierra de Guadarrama, 50 kilometers northwest of Madrid. The most retired nursing homes in the capital were less affected during the first wave. The outbreak occurs when some residences in Madrid have already received the second dose of the Pfizer vaccine and are on the verge of reaching the long-awaited security bubble after a tragic year.

The deadliest outbreaks in the second wave in Madrid have occurred in residences that got rid of the virus in the first wave. “There are outbreaks in centers with low and high immunity, although numerous outbreaks tend to occur in centers with low immunity,” Javier Martínez Peromingo, director general of socio-health coordination, tells this newspaper.
