Beating the Heat: Finding Cool Spots to Escape the Stifling Temperatures in Toulouse

The heat has hit the Occitanie region for several days. Temperatures will continue to climb until the end of the week. In Toulouse (Haute-Garonne), everyone is looking for a place to cool off.

In Toulouse (Haute-Garonne), as in the rest of the Occitanie region, the heat is stifling. Cahors (Lot) and Carcassone (Aude) show 32°C, Nîmes (Gars) 33°C. The temperatures are climbing, climbing and this should continue in the next few days.

This Sunday, August 13, the thermometer shows 33°C in Toulouse. Tourists and Toulouse residents are doubling down on tips to find cool spots in the pink city.

Walking the streets of Toulouse in this stifling heat is complicated. Some choose to sit on the terrace, in the shade of parasols, sitting strategically next to a mist.

A woman seated on the Place du Capitole attests to the microphone of France 3: “cIt’s nice, the heat is quite bearable with the misters, we have a drink, it’s cool, quiet and pleasant”. Cold drinks and ice cream are big favorites in brasseries, restaurants and street vendors.

When the air becomes unbreathable in homes, others look instead for islands of coolness to rest, read or even have lunch. The parks are popular and meet all the criteria for cooling off.

Three friends who came to spend the day in a park in Toulouse explain: “ in town we sweat even in the shade. Here it’s much cooler, it’s ideal for a game of Molky!”.

Water points are also the big winners during these high temperatures. Some opt for a stroll on the Garonne and the Brienne canal, on foot or by boat. The air is more breathable there at the edge of the water and under the trees. “It allows you to enjoy the city from another angle and without getting too hot”, says a tourist.

We will have to be patient for the temperatures to fall. They are expected to stay above 30 degrees until the end of the month, with peaks of 37°C expected next weekend. The city of Toulouse has created an interactive map to find cool areas.
