BE CAREFUL WITH APPS THAT OFFER CREDITS: INFORMAL ENTITIES EXTORT CUSTOMERS USING THE PERSONAL INFORMATION THEY KEEP ON THEIR CELL PHONES

Maquicash, Stella Crédito, SoleWaka, Chekera, Altirocash, Cumpacash, Dinero Ya, Tu Efecty, Kina and Ch Buro de Crédito are the ten applications that the Financial Market Commission reported to the Public Ministry for the crime of usury. They all offer fast loans, but with interests that far exceed the maximum established rates.

To request the loan, people must download the entity’s App on their cell phones, which allows criminals to access their files and personal data, information that they then use to extort them and thus get them to pay the fees with an interest that can reach at 300%.

“All of these applications request permissions that are excessive, such as access to the camera, location, photos and contacts of the person requesting the credit. The problem is that all this material can be used to carry out some fraud, malicious action or extortion, as has been seen in this case,” explains the Operations Manager LEVEL4, Hernán Möller.

The victims of these crimes are mostly people who do not qualify for loans in the formal financial system. The criminals begin to pressure for payment and if it does not materialize, they call or send messages to their contacts evidencing the debt. They also threaten to release photographs or messages saved on the cell phone.

“On the list there are applications that are in the PlayStore or AppStore, but that does not mean they are safer. Now, if they are not there, you definitely do not have to install them, because it is very likely that they contain some malware or virus that compromises the computer’s data,” says the LEVEL4 expert.

Although there is an ongoing investigation, the PDI Economic Crimes Brigade insists on ruling out the temptation to obtain easy credit – for example for Christmas or holidays – in institutions that are not regulated by the Financial Market Commission.
