Be alert, bad breath can be a sign of diabetes

High sugar levels can be a trigger for bad breath.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Diabetes often does not cause symptoms at the beginning, so sufferers are rarely aware of it. Changes to the mouth can help people recognize diabetes early.

When diabetes is not recognized early, the patient’s blood sugar levels can be out of control for a long time. This condition can increase the risk of serious complications in various organs of the body, such as the kidneys, eyes, and nerves.

Therefore, finding diabetes faster is an important thing to do. One way to do this is to watch for changes to the mouth.

According to the Diabetes and Wellness Foundation, there are two changes in the mouth area that are closely related to diabetes. The two changes are dry mouth and breath that smells like fruit or fruity.

Diabetes UK adds, there is one other change in the mouth that is also worth watching out for related to diabetes. The changes are bad breath or halitosis.

Bad breath can occur because high blood sugar levels in diabetics can increase glucose levels in saliva. This can be a food source for bacteria in the mouth and trigger the buildup of dental plaque.

“If dental plaque is not removed effectively, tooth decay and gum disease can occur, (both of which) also lead to halitosis,” Diabetes UK said. Unilad, Sunday (10/4/2022).

Bad breath in people with diabetes can also be caused by ketoacidosis. Ketoacidosis is a condition in which the body burns fat instead of burning glucose. This condition can occur because insulin levels in the blood are too little or insulin resistance is too high.

“Ketones are then formed as a waste product which causes an unusual odor in the breath,” explains Diabetes UK.

Some other signs to watch out for related to diabetes are increased thirst, increased frequency of urination, and feeling unwell. The appearance of fatigue, blurred vision, and unplanned weight loss can also be signs of diabetes.

Diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by elevated blood sugar levels above normal. About 90 percent of diabetes cases are type 2 diabetes which is closely related to choosing an unhealthy diet and lifestyle.

Uncontrolled blood sugar levels can make people with diabetes more at risk for some serious complications. Some of them are kidney failure, stroke, and heart disease.
