Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge thinks a “Super League” would shake the foundations of football

Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is at the helm of one of those successful clubs in all of global football. Winners on the pitch and on the accounting ledgers, Bayern Munich is a club that has dedicated itself to doing things the right way.

Still, the mark of any good business is looking for ways to evolve. For many major European football clubs, the thought of a “Super League” is enticing, given how much money could be at stake. For Rummenigge, that is one evolution he does not want to see come to pass.

“That’s something I could never imagine. A super league would shake the foundations of European football. I don’t believe that’s right,” said Rummenigge in an interview with The Athletic. “I don’t see that happening. These two competitions (Champions League, Bundesliga) have thrived in coexistence in the past and I’d expect them to thrive in the future as well.”

The financial aspect of such a league is obviously appealing to many, many clubs — particularly a few in Spain — but the rich traditions of German and English clubs might be the only thing holding such a thing back from happening.
