Barcelona’s beaches will be closed during the festival

Barcelona City Council has decided close the city beaches during the Sant Joan festival to avoid the concentration of numerous people in the middle of the ‘covid era’ and thus prevent a possible massive contagion by coronavirus. The traditional party, according to municipal officials, will have to be “intimate and family”, and that night Only very few bonfires, always with permission, of no more than one square meter will be allowed.

The measure has been announced this afternoon by Deputy Mayor Janet Sanz and Albert Batlle, the latter responsible for security, at a press conference held at the town hall. The reason is the difficulty of guaranteeing the minimum interpersonal distance of two meters to avoid contagions in a celebration of these characteristics, such as They demonstrate the images of the verbena from last summer on the beaches of Barcelona.

Sources of the Conselleria d’Interior have explained that the competition on the beaches and their use in the festival is municipal and that, therefore, there will be no generalized mandatory veto that affects all of Catalonia.

From eight in the afternoon to 10 in the morning

Sanz has referred to the necessary “family character of the verbena that must serve to reunite with loved ones.” For this reason, not only will access to urban beaches be prevented from eight in the afternoon on June 23 and until 10 in the morning on Sant Joan day, but also massive popular festivals will not be held in the city. “There will be no festive activity and that is why we propose to have the party at home or in the same neighborhood”, the deputy mayor has insisted.
