Barcelona begins work to widen sidewalks and bike lanes

The plays that will gain space for pedestrians and cyclists in the de-escalation of confinement in Barcelona have started this Monday. One of the first actions started is the extension of the sidewalk of the street Consell of Cent, between Urgell and Passeig de Gràcia, and the reduction of the car’s space to a lane defined at 30 km / h.

In addition, this measure will be accompanied on this street of the withdrawal of the motorcycles in the sidewalks, a plan that the City Council started in February in Vila de Gràcia and now wants to accelerate. “The objective is that the plan will be increased and developed in the coming weeks, we will speed it up,” said the deputy mayor for Ecology, Urban Planning, Infrastructure and Mobility of Barcelona, Janet Sanz, at a press conference this Monday.

In this first package of measures, work also begins to improve the Pla de Palau bus route and Passeig de Gràcia, as well as the creation of bicycle corridors in València and Pau Claris streets. These actions are implemented under the so-called tactical urbanism, with the use of cones, paintings and signs, although the municipal government indicates that the objective is that they be “indefinite”.

Other notable measures such as cutting part of the sides of the Great
Via and the avenue Diagonal They do not have a date yet, although they will take place in the coming days, before the end of May.

The plan contemplates that the passer-by will gain 30,000 square meters of public space with 17 interventions to improve the bus lanes and 21 new kilometers of bicycle corridors on the city’s 10 main routes. “It is essential and essential to manage public space in a different way so that safety distances can be guaranteed,” says Sanz.

This Monday the Parc de la Ciutadella also opens its doors, which joins the seventy parks that already opened on Friday May 1 to facilitate the mobility of citizens and maintain the safety distances recommended by health authorities. Sanz recalled that these areas “are transit and not stay” so he has asked citizens to be “jointly responsible” so that social distancing is met.

On the other hand, the City Council has reported that from April 30 to May 3, coinciding with the departure of walks and the sports practice of citizens, the Guàrdia Urbana and the Mossos have made 2,021 complaints and some 8,500 notices. Since the start of the state of alarm, this figure amounts to some 35,000 complaints and 66,000 notices, according to municipal data.
