The dream of the championship is over for Lionel Messi and Inter Miami. The club from Florida lost for the first time on Saturday (local time) with the Argentine superstar on the pitch. The 0-1 defeat against FC Cincinnati also meant that participation in the playoffs is no longer mathematically possible for Miami.

Messi was back in action for his team for the first time since September 20th. Injury problems had slowed the world champion down in the last four games. Against Cincinnati he came on the pitch in the 55th minute, but couldn’t prevent the defeat thanks to Alvaro Barreal’s winning goal (79th). Messi played a few chances – including two promising free kicks. However, he missed the goal threat from his previous appearances for the MLS club.

A long winter break in the US league awaits Messi. The new season doesn’t start until February next year. The long break has already given rise to rumors that Messi could be loaned out to former club FC Barcelona during the break. “I don’t know anything about that,” coach Tata Martino said after the game against Cincinnati.
